Diamonds 2, Awakeri
Angels 0 August 7 Another impressive
outing
for the Diamonds, with each member of the team making a valuable
contribution
and showing just how much they have developed since first kick-off in
May. Millie
Jefferies cheerfully put herself in the firing
line as first-half goalie, showing 100 per cent focus and saving a
string of
would-be goals. Emily
Hart, Sylvie Casey and Sharyn Joseph were dogged
on attack, making run after run at the goal. It was only a matter of
time
before some of the shots found their mark, and by half time the
Diamonds were
two up thanks to Emily and Sylvie. Sylvie
played keeper in the second half, frustrating
every Angels attempt. The Diamonds continued to look dangerous,
threatening to
score again on several occasions, but at final whistle the score
remained 2-0. Ryleah
Hayes McMahon was crowned Player of the
Day for great all-round effort.
Awakeri Jets 1, Ohope Diamonds 0 What an incredible effort from every
member of the Diamonds in this fast-paced, action-packed game. Some
fleet-footed opposition kept our little sparklers on their toes – in
fact, they were well and truly put through their paces with hard,
end-to-end running from first to last whistle.
Goalie Anna Linnell-Olson stood her ground resolutely and chalked up some excellent saves. And there was plenty more bravery on display, on both defence and offence. With one of our top strikers, Sylvie Casey, away the pressure was on, but several of the Diamonds stepped up to the mark. Ryleah Hayes McMahon showed speed and an impressive level of fitness; Emily Hart also never seemed to slow to a jog, and tackled hard and fearlessly; Sharyn Joseph displayed great footwork and determination, and she, Emily and the tenacious Amy Humpherson were unlucky not to score on more than several occasions. However, despite all the girls’ hard work, nothing could stop a ripper of a shot by the Jets, and it was 1-0 at halftime. The pace did not slow during the second half, despite some obviously tiring legs. Pluckiness and spirit remained the order of the day, with Isabella Pocock and Millie Jefferies piling on the pressure midfield. Sienna Hogg as second-half goalie bagged a number of excellent saves and great defensive work by the Diamonds kept the Jets frustrated. 1-0 it remained at the end. Anna was crowned our golden girl for the day – well done, you Player of the Day! With only four more games on the draw, it is amazing to reflect on how far each of the team has come since their first outing on May 1. The way the girls have developed as focussed, hard-working and determined soccer players in only three months is nothing short of impressive. Long may they play together! A million thanks to coach Amy for her unfailing positive spirit, enthusiasm and encouragement for the girls. Ohope Diamonds 2, Saints United 1 Playing a new entrants team of littlies,
the Diamonds looked like long-legged, fleet-footed giantesses – but
last week’s lesson about size was reinforced with another: age doesn’t
matter either!
The gutsy Saints 4 and 5-year-olds showed no fear, even though their view of their opposition wasn’t much above knee height. With each of the Saints contesting possession strongly, it was all about tackling and kicking, and the Diamonds struggled to create space or pace. Nevertheless, the girls created a legion of scoring opportunities and a double-digit Diamonds score was prevented only by courageous Saints goalkeeping. At half-time, nothing was on the scoreboard, but a few minutes into the second half Sharyn Joseph walloped a beauty into the net – only for Saints to equalise just seconds later. Sharyn hit back and was unlucky to be only a whisker away from scoring again, but a few minutes later her determination paid off and she made it 2-1. Coach Amy Hayes had a tough decision to make over Player of the Day, with consistent, focussed and enthusiastic play putting both Sienna Hogg and Millie Jefferies in the running for the coveted trophy. In the end, the gold man went to Sienna for unwavering commitment and effort. Ohope Diamonds 1,
Kawerau Teenie Weenies 1
If there was one lesson for the Diamonds in this round, it was that size doesn’t matter. Kawerau’s aptly named Teenie Weenies, some with their shirts skimming their calves and ankles, showed that what they lacked in height they made up for with heart. With our Diamonds looking like Amazons in comparison, one could have expected a walkover. But the Teenie Weenies put up a great fight, testing the Diamonds attacking power and competitive instinct. Also showing a big heart was our own Ryleah Hayes McMahon, who volunteered to make up numbers in the Kawerau team. She not only put bite into the Kawerau attack, but she did it with flair and commitment, performing a personal best – a 100 per cent effort that earned her Player of the Day. Stepping up beautifully too was ring-in Sienna Hogg. There to boost numbers (with a player away), Sienna also boosted morale with a series of confident saves as keeper. The Diamonds’ goal was a corker, slammed in from a tricky angle by Sharyn Joseph – a natural defender who has benefitted from coach Amy’s drive to encourage the girls forward. A few minutes later, Sharyn nearly had another stunner but her second swipe at goal was stopped by a Teenie Weenie, and the Kawerau crew scored one themselves soon after. It was Bella’s turn to don the gloves in the second half, while the rest of the team concentrated on positioning themselves and creating space. The Diamonds looked well-organised at times, defending well, controlling the ball, and making some impressive attacking runs (Emily Hart’s all with a big, wide smile on her dial). A little more killer instinct and a bit more follow-through at the goalmouth, and the girls would have come away with a much bigger score. Kawerau
Tarawera Eels 5, Ohope Diamonds 0 A 5-0 score is a
whopping in
any language, but it doesn’t tell the full story – and it certainly
doesn’t
reflect the gargantuan effort the girls put into this face-off at
Kawerau’s Coach Amy Hayes
was
extremely proud of her team, praising each and every player for doing
just as
they were asked: taking the ball forward, and tackling strongly. “It was the best
I’ve ever
seen you play,” she said after the game. The Diamonds
focussed fully
on their task to play forward, with even die-hard defenders playing up
front. Midfield,
determination was fierce, tackling was hard and persistent, and every
ball was
contested. Several of the Diamonds proved their worth centre field,
with Millie
Jefferies and Emily Hart both putting in particularly gutsy
performances. However,
the Tarawera Eels proved slippery customers, making the Diamonds pay
dearly for
an empty backfield. Anna Linnell-Olson
showed
great concentration as first-half goalie, calmly and steadily fending
off a
blizzard of Kawerau strikes and doing well to limit the Eels to 2 goals
by half
time. After the break,
it was
Sylvie Casey in the firing line and under sustained attack from one
powerful
Kawerau boot in particular. But even Sylvie’s cool-headed keeping
couldn’t stop
3 bullets from finding their mark. Player of the Day
was Emily
Hart, who played an intelligent and consistent game, turning
effortlessly from
defender to attacker and showing she is definitely a player to watch in
the
future. Ohope Diamonds 0 Girls
will always have a problem
with boys ... as the young guns of the Player
of the day went to Sharyn Joseph for her all-round effort
Grade 6
May 8 Edgecumbe Dragons 3, Ohope Diamonds 3 They came out fighting - and kept battling till the last gasp in this fast-paced nail-biter. In the first half, the Diamonds could have written the manual for How To Train Your Dragon. Sharyn Joseph kicked things off for the Diamonds, scoring a goal so quickly (about 20 seconds after the whistle) that she stunned even herself. The shock start cranked up the Dragons, but they remained Toothless as Diamonds goalie Amy Humpherson fought off every challenge with a series of courageous saves. After the break, though, it was a different story. The Dragons came out breathing fire, looking to prove that the first half was just a Hiccup. Ryleah Hayes McMahon took first blood in the second half – 2-0 to the Diamonds. But 30 seconds later the Dragons fired off a goal that keeper Isabella Pocock had no chance of stopping. The Diamonds showed their class with a precision throw-in from Ryleah, picked up stylishly by Sylvie Casey, but the Dragons, fired up by their goal, turned on a relentless attack. The play was end-to-end then. Isabella stopped several bullets, but little legs were tiring quickly and our goalie, for the most part, was out there alone. For the Dragons, disaster struck when an own-goal trickled in, but the Edgcumbites evened up the tally soon after. With 3-3 the final score, coach Amy Hayes was proud as. “They were brilliant,” she said. “They came out fighting and they carried on through.” Amy Humpherson was named Player of the Day, a well-deserved honour for a plucky little girl. Ohope’s
Diamonds put on a dazzling display in their first outing for the season
– an away game against the Awakeri Dolphins. With only two training sessions under their bling-encrusted belts, the all-girl team nevertheless came out shooting from the hip, amazing mums and brothers on the sidelines with their steely determination, fearless tackling, and great sense of direction. There was no danger of an own-goal here – these girls all had their thinking caps firmly on, and their sense of purpose and focus was terrific. ![]() Already, some formidable striking talent is showing through, and, at the other end of the field, rock-solid defensive spirit. Coach Amy Hayes was delighted with the team’s effort, crowning Sylvie Casey the player of the day for her goal, achieved after a fabulous solo run to score and a never-say-die approach. ![]() ![]() EBOPJMC 2010 6th GRADE
