August 1
Ohope Mustangs 0 Ohope Storm Troopers 0
SO
much effort, so much energy, so much eagerness ... and not a single
goal to show for it. Never
mind, at least no one got too soaked as the
worst of the rain thoughtfully
came at halftime when everyone could
huddle under a tree.
The Storm Troopers had the
better of the contest and will probably feel
they should have wrapped this
one up but who could begrudge the Mustangs
a share of the spoils with
their never-say-die attitude?
In the opening minutes a good
Troopers effort hit the post and bounced
clear, perhaps suggesting that
this was not to be their day and that
goals would be hard to come by.
Not too long afterward, they
hit the woodwork again. Yes, we got the
message.
For the Mustangs, it was all
hands to the defensive pump and Carson van
Asselt in goal and Sharyn
Joseph in front of him had to show their
mettle on numerous occasions.
Up front, Emerson Billings
tried valiantly to get something going for
the Mustangs but he found it
hard to make much impact against a solid
Storm Troopers rearguard.
With
Jonathan Schooler
battling in midfield, Asger Evans joined the
attack but the Mustangs
couldn't cash in when the opportunities arose.
After the halftime dousing,
the Mustangs came out looking to add a
little sunshine to the game.
Quinn McNabb roved menacingly and Ben
Akroyd was always in support
but it was the Storm Troopers who looked
most likely to get on the
score sheet.
A flurry of attacks around the
goal had the Mustangs supporters' hearts
in their mouths, but the team
gamely held out.
And when all seemed lost,
there was always Asger in goal to deny the
opposition, at one point
risking life, limb and his front teeth to dive
bravely at the feet of an
attacker.
His combined effort in the
outfield and in goal won him a deserved
player of the day accolade.
25 July 2009
Edgecumbe Dragons 1, Ohope Mustangs 0
The
two-week breather left the Mustangs champing at the bit in their first
outing after the holidays. Kingpin Emerson Billings was virtually
pawing the ground before the whistle blew at Edgecumbe, and a number of
his team mates were equally quick out of the cage and eager to enter
the fray.
Who knows what Quinn McNabb’s
mum’s been feeding him, but whatever it is – it’s working! Quinn co-led
the Mustangs charge and played his best yet this season, kicking hard
and long, and staying focussed throughout the game – an effort that
earned him a well-deserved Player of the Day.
Also out front, tackling and
driving as never before, were Asger Evans and Carson van Asselt. The
four Mustangs set a blistering pace, and showed attacking skills that
kept the Dragons keeper right on his toes.
Jamieson Bicknell focussed his
eagle eyes on keeping Ohope’s goal safe. His fierce determination
thwarted many first-half attempts by the Dragons, and his concentration
did not waver.
With the luxury of three subs,
the Mustangs were able to keep their momentum – Ben Akroyd revving up
Ohope’s attack, Sharyn Joseph applying pressure in the backfield, and
Jonathan Schooler confusing the opposition with a few cunning plans of
his own.
But the Dragons – even without
subs – refused to run out of puff and managed to sneak one into the net.
Emerson’s willpower was
matched only by his brilliant footwork in the second half, and Carson
also shone as keeper, blocking some heart-stopping strikes. The
Mustangs continued to run and tackle hard, but the team’s focus shifted
from attack to defense and despite a last-gasp assault on the
fire-eaters by Emerson, final score remained 1-0.
Hakuna Matata Transfield Dynamos 10, Ohope Mustangs 0
They were six feet tall and at least 12 years old,
but did
our brave Mustangs cower? Not for a moment – Ohope’s magnificent eight
faced a
swifter, stronger and sharper-shooting team of amazons and titans ...
and only
endless reserves of Mustang grit and determination kept them from being
trampled into the Matata mud.
Matata had the kickoff and the onslaught began.
Within
seconds Mustangs keeper Jonathan Schooler performed the first of many
death-defying saves – a first-half feat that won him Player of the Day.
Well
done, buddy.
Ben Akroyd – apparently oblivious to the size and
strength
of the opposition – started as he meant to go on, tackling hard and
driving the
Mustangs attack again and again, ably supported by hard-working,
never-say-die
Emerson Billings. Carson van Asselt and Jamieson Bicknell threw
themselves into
the fray fearlessly too, applying consistent midfield pressure.
Jamieson also showed a good head for defence,
dropping to
the back with dogged defender Sharyn Joseph, each of them patrolling
the back
field to intercept some whoppers.
Quinn McNabb and Asger Evans executed some
impressive
tackling, and the Mustangs generally showed great fortitude in keeping
the
first-half tally to 2-0.
In his last outing for the Mustangs, Tarquin Magner
ran on
after half time with great focus and purpose – and a much-needed fresh
pair of
legs. But despite Tarquin’s determination, Emerson’s skilful footwork,
Asger’s
great saves and Ben’s impressive twisting and dodging, Matata racked up
another
four goals.
Thank goodness for the holiday break. We’ll be back
next
term – bigger and stronger after two weeks of carb-loading and
body-building.
Bon voyage, Tarquin – see you in Term 4, buddy.

Dolphins 10
It was the Alamo, it was Little Big Horn
...
whichever way you call it,the poor Mustangs were under
siege for almost all the game and eventually routed 10-zip.
Full credit to the
Dolphins,
they made their size, speed and skill advantage count to the max -
and in their lanky blond striker they had a natural
match-winner.
The
game had barely kicked
off than the Dolphins were a goal down to an excellent
left-foot shot
from an acute angle. And they were caught napping at the
re-start as
Blondie opened his account with a right-foot drive.
Mustangs
gutsy goalie
Jamieson Bicknell was the busiest man in the team and his
efforts seem to
inspire a more resolute approach which saw some stout defence from
Carson
van Asselt and Sharyn Joseph, while Asger Evans added a bit
of
much-needed physical presence to the team.
A
third goal just before the
break hinted at the storm that was to come.Emerson Billings
took over in
goal, but Jamieson still fancied the job between the
sticks, saving a
certain goal with his knees. Mustang’s sense of direction
temporarily deserted them and it was soon 4-0 ... then 5-0. Emerson went walkabout and ended up stranded
on the
touchline as
the ball was
knocked into the empty net.
Seconds
later, the blonde
bombshell broke clear and buried his fourth goal and
Dolphins seventh,
while a solo effort added number eight. He repeated the
trick shortly
afterwards, taking his personal tally to six.In a rare
Mustangs attack,
Tarquin Magner had a good effort well saved, while at the
other end
Emerson saved bravely from point blank range at the feet of a Dolphins
striker.
The
10th - and, thankfully,
final - goal came from a goalmouth scramble, and there was some relief
at
the final whistle.
Jamieson
was a worthy player
of the day.
James St Aces 2, Ohope Mustangs 0
It was a big ask for little
legs and short concentration spans when only
five Mustangs took the field
against the hard-working James St Aces.
With a couple of Mustangs down
with flu, and another on a flight home
from warmer climes, the team
was down to the bare minimum with no
substitutes on the sideline.
The Mustangs had the kickoff.
Tarquin Magner and Emerson Billings fired
into action with a series of
strong attacks, but the Aces had an answer
for every one of the boys’
fantastic runs. Very soon, Ohope was on the
backfoot, tackling tenaciously
in the face of the Aces’ unrelenting
challenges.
Luckily for the Mustangs, Ben
Akroyd’s bravery in the goal never wavered
and his absolute commitment
thwarted the Aces again and again. That
determination was supported by
Sharyn Joseph’s defensive instincts,
which kept her hovering near
the goalmouth, and there were many
desperate battles as nine
pairs of legs converged in front of Ohope’s goal.

Jonathan Schooler showed great
courage in midfield, getting in plenty of
kicks, but the highlight of
the first half for Mustangs supporters had
to be Ben’s fearless
point-blank save during a tense goalmouth standoff
just minutes from the halftime
whistle.
With the halftime score of
nil-nil not reflecting the huge amount of
pressure on the Mustangs goal,
assistant coach Ross Billings made the
wise call to leave Ben
literally in the firing line. The Aces kicked off
and, only minutes later, one
of their number netted a blinder of a goal.
With the beleaguered Mustangs
beginning to tire, the second half was all
about defence. Ben’s valiant
goalkeeping kept the Aces on their toes,
and Ohope developed an
intriguing defensive wedge, managing at one point
to thwart an Aces corner – but
the James Street team eventually netted a
second goal.

The rest of the game was the
Ben and Emerson show, with both boys
showing great stamina and grit
to the bitter end. Emerson’s resolve was
demonstrated time and again
with strong attacking challenges, even in
the dying minutes of the game.
And Ben’s hard work meant the final score
of 2-0 did not reflect the
true extent of the Aces’ upper hand.
Player of the day was stalwart
defender Sharyn Joseph. Special thanks to
Quinn McNabb and his mum, who
turned out to support the team from the
sideline during Quinn’s
recovery from flu.

A big thank-you from the Ohope Mustangs to Di and Wade Brown who have
provided each player with their own McDonald's soccer ball.
A great ball ... and a great gift. Now we can all do extra practise at
home!

Mustangs 1 Paroa Jets
5
at Bluett Park
Had the magnificent effort
required for the school production taken its toll? After the
all-consuming Colour My World, the Mustangs were a bit off-colour
against a
confident Paroa Jets.Confusion in defence saw
them concede a goal in the opening minutes and, shortly after, Emerson
Billings in goal had to save well to prevent a second.
It was five minutes before
the Mustangs launched their first attack -- Jamieson
Bicknell and
Tarquin Magner combining well. The skilful Ben Akroyd was a
constant threat down the right wing but, just when it seemed the
Mustangs were getting back into the game, Paroa broke out of defence
and the
ball was in the back of the old onion bag again -- 2-0.
The Jets certainly had a
clear sense of where the goal was and what they needed to
do and their
female striker, distinguished by her pink hairband, was
always a
danger. Emerson saved bravely from her at point blank range
but, minutes
later, she was cool, calm and collected to knock in number
three.
Just before halftime, the
Mustangs defence went AWOL again and it was four. The second
half was a much
more even contest, with the Mustangs getting some
organisation into their
defence and a bit more shape to their game.
With Emerson playing out,
they looked a stronger unit and, though the litle girl with the pink
hairband added another goal for Paroa, Ohope did manage a
consolation
goal -- and a very good one at that. A melee -- make that a
ruck
-- developed in midfield and, from nowhere, Carson van
Asselt swung his
trusty right foot and whacked it home. So Mustangs had the
last word
but Paroa, with their impressive finishing
skills, were worthy winners.
Player of the day -- Emerson
(well-deserved); things to work on --
defence and
getting between the attackers and our
goal.
