Ohope Jets  v  Whakatane Flames Score: 5 - 0

PLAYER OF THE DAY 6th August

Bryon Melville

Well done Bryon, you focused, stayed on the ball and kept driving it forward!

Bryon

(Remind Mum to bring the mandarins/oranges for half time at our next game, thanks!)

Being our first game back after the holiday break the boys were keen as mustard to get into the game.  Bryon had his best game this season, he must have been stepping up to the challenge of playing against a family relative in the opposing team!  Bryon was confident kicking the ball, and kept with it to drive the ball forward towards our goal.  His defensive work showed he is building confidence in putting himself amongst the action.  Way to go Bryon you played hard and deserved the player of the day trophy this week.

The score of 5 – 0 made this our highest scoring game this season!  Alex and Ryan had a great time firing that ball through the goal posts.  Sam had a good game this week too, he was tuned into the game and enjoyed being among the ball action.  We shared the goal position around with Tamati taking a turn and he showed he was able to do a great job for the team.

With only a few games left, the intensity and urgency is increasing as the boys realise they need to make the most of the field time before it is all over for another season.

Go Ohope Jets!

Ohope Jets  v  Saints Shooters
Score:2-3

   July 16th 2011

PLAYER OF THE DAY 16th July

Tamati Black-Barr

Well done Tamati, awesome strong kicks and following through by chasing after the ball!

Tamati

This was our earliest game time so far, and it was invigoratingly chilly at the Saints field.  Lance gave the team a good warm up, it sure was needed!! Then the real action started.

It was a closely matched game yet again, and the boys looked to be enjoying the challenge.  There was a lot of movement up and down the field, so the team had plenty of game action  and they had to run hard to keep up!  The low score was indicative of the evenness of the teams.

Tamati has been improving all season, and has been so close to getting player of the day previously.  In this game he again showed that he is developing his skills and remembered to follow the ball up after sending it off with a big strong kick down field.  He ran hard and never gave up. Phew, that is hard work! Fantastic game Tamati, you have the coveted trophy to display for 3 weeks!! Lucky you.

Jamieson and Matt were the proud score makers this game, their determination and persistence paid off.  There were a few players who were close to scoring this week, they went just a tad too wide of the posts. Bryon was keen and was often in possession of the ball.  Sam showed he has skills in the goal position this week, and got a taste of how tough it can be there, but that did not seem to worry him.  Alex and Ryan were reliable as always and ran hard everywhere. In the first half Jonathan exercised his skills in the forward position, and in the second half he put in a great effort in goal - saving the oppositions score from rising many times.  Fletcher turned on some powerful drives forward and kept on the ball, nearly getting a goal for his determination.

Another game over, score was 3-2 to Saints Shooters.  Now a few weeks rest for the holidays, but keep practicing your ball skills every opportunity you get!  Go Ohope Jets!

Ohope Jets  v  Allendale Rovers

July 9th 2011

PLAYER OF THE DAY

Sam Hart

Well done Sam, you really got into the game and focused!

sam

Wow what another great game we had this week!  Allendale needed a bus to bring their team over, there were so many of them!  But that did not scare our Ohope Jets off, oh no not at all, the Jets got stuck right in and kept going all game.

We ran some quick subs due to a couple of the boys not being at 100% health, and also cause those Allendale Rovers had fresh legs with 5 players always waiting on the sideline to run on.

Our team worked well with the variety of combinations, and Sam really stepped up his ante this week!  He ran onto the ball, kicked up front, followed his drives, and focused on the game.  He put in an awesome display of football and was deserving of the much valued Player of the Day trophy!

We held Allendate to 1 – 1 till nearthe end.  Jonathan stopped heaps of potential points being clocked up.  Tamati also had a fantastic game, he really found his stride, ran heaps, stayed on the ball, and played so hard he up ended onto the turf more than once!!

It was another very even game, and once again the opposition was lucky to come out with a win.  Score 2-1 to Allendale.  It was a great game - Go Ohope Jets!

Ohope Jets  v  Kawerau Raiders

July 2nd 2011

PLAYER OF THE DAY

Jamieson Bicknell

Well done Jamieson, great hard tackling and determination!

Jamieson

It was a tough game against Kawerau.  Our team had to work together to match the opposition, and sure enough the boys stepped up to the mark and played awesomely!

The score did not reflect the true balance of the game, as the teams were evenly pitched.  There was lots of action and scoring, making it one of our more exciting and nerve wreaking games.  Our supporters were fantastic in their encouragement and enthusiasm.

Jamieson played like a demon, I think he was proudly showing his Nana and Poppa all his skills!!  He was all over the field, attacking, defending, never giving up and he also scored!

The Jets were just unlucky not to get a few more through the posts, and Kawerau got a cheap goal near the end of the game.  Our boys put in a frantic last minute trying to get the ball to our end to even the score, but time was against us.

Score was 4-5 to Kawerau, but it was still an awesome team effort - Go Ohope Jets!

Three cheers

Ohope Jets  v  Otakiri  Score 3-0

25th June 2011

PLAYER OF THE DAY

Ryan S

Well done Ryan, you were focused, committed on attack and defense, and scored as well!

Ryan

Yay we finally got to play, the rain stayed away and the sun was shining!!  Otakiri field was pleasantly well drained and totally playable.

The missed trainings and games showed a bit today, with our team not quite as sharp and drilled as we saw at our last competition game, but the keenness was still evident.  Good to see Tamati back on the field again too with his big strong boot a valuable asset to the team.

Ryan was the one on fire this week, he was quick at the start to get us on the boards, and was consistently in the action on attack and defense.  He has put in a big effort each week, shows sharp individual skills and also plays well as a team with good passing and support play.

Again it was the team passing that gave us the best movements up the field, and Alex came in with his lightning bolt driving kicks from back field.  His attacks were swift and fierce.

Matt was keen as ever and put in a goal with some good team passing between players.

Sam and Byron combined well, on and off the field.  Sam is always enthusiastic and excited on the field.  Byron loved those big puddles which were just off the field!  He also got a chance to slip into the goalie uniform and try out his skills there.

Jonathan got out of the goal and into some field time this week.  He made the most of it by getting amongst the action.  Jamieson ran hard all game, showed good footwork and persistence throughout the game, and was rewarded by scoring a goal.

Overall it was another good team effort which gave us our success.  It was great to see the sideline members giving support during the game, and acknowledging players as they came off the field for a sub.  Keep up the great team spirit!  Score 3 – 0 !!

The swim and kai at Awakeri Hot Pools nicely topped off the day, just what the tired bodies needed to recover so they will be in top form next week!

 Go Ohope Jets!

Ohope Jets  v  Awakeri Aces  Score 5 - 4

11th June 2011

PLAYER OF THE DAY

Matt R

Well done Matt, you were keen and on the ball all game!

matt ryan

Bluett Park was a soggy field for the game against Awakeri, and our boys boots must have been stuck in the mud at the start, cause Awakeri came out on fire and had a goal in the first minute from kick off!  This set the fast pace for the game, with lots of action and lots of points scored making it an awesome spectator game.  Thanks boys!

After the fast start by the opposition, our boys woke up and got on task.  Jamieson and Ryan teamed up to drive the ball up field and created some attacking action in front of the goal.

Bryon initiated a good movement by defending and winning the ball then passing it to the side for Alex to come in from his trade mark position in back field.  He bolted onto the ball did a quick pass off, then received it back and fired it through the goal!  Fantastic team play and it paid off.

Jonathan had an action packed time in the goal this week, saving them in the corner, directly in front, in fact they came from everywhere!  He took a huge hit to his face, but held his position and made sure our team was safe before getting some much needed attention.  Amazing commitment and dedication to the team Jonathan, you are truly showing your value in that goal position!

Matt was real quick off the mark each time Awakeri was in possession of the ball, not giving them time to set play or gather their thoughts.  He ran all game, attacking with determination and getting back to defend.  All that cross country training was showing its worth, the fitness levels are up and our team had heaps of energy.

Ryan was not shy of taking a defensive role, he put his legs on the line for the team by tackling the big booter of Awakeri and preventing him getting a good kick at goal.  Throughout the game Ryan was fast onto the ball, and had good ball control.

Jamieson took an opportunity and stole the ball from this big boot and drove it towards our goal, not being phased by the pressure being put on him all the way, Awakeri were not giving up without a battle!  Jamieson was always in the action and focused on getting results.

This game was a fantastic team effort with awesome passing between our players.  As the opposition was a force to be reckoned with, our boys had the opportunity to realise the value of passing to each other and positioning themselves well so the ball worked for them.

It was such an exciting game, I couldn’t keep up with my notes taking, so I threw away the clipboard and enjoyed supporting and cheering instead.  Fantastic game boys.  By playing consistently as a team we won 5-4!!!

Awesome team effort - Go Ohope Jets!

Ohope Jets  v  Ohope Diamonds

PLAYER OF THE DAY

Alex M

Well done Alex, great all round skills and 2 goals!!

Jets

There was a bit of excitement before the game, though not surprising as it was Ohope Diamonds v Ohope Jets!!! Pride was on the line, and they knew the girls would not let them forget in a hurry if the Diamonds won!

It was straight into a fierce battle at the start of the game.  Matt sent a good pass to his mates with a big kick upfield.  Then keen to get some action going he focused and took such a huge big kick at goal that the follow through momentum threw him off balance and his butt touched the turf – ouch, that hurt!

Jamieson found the ball coming at him from high, so using the skills practiced at training, he bumped the ball on his chest to get control then drove hard to the goal, but their goalie Amy was ready.

Ryan went into battle to win the ball, pressured it forward and fired off a strong kick for goal, but once again Amy was waiting for it.

Jamieson did a quick throw in to Alex who drove fiercely to the posts, and cleverly put a high loop kick over Amy’s head, which sailed between the posts. Alex’s awesome tactical skills put us on the scoreboards at last!

Jamieson got back into some action, and took one of the girls out in a tackle, didn’t stop to pick her up, but followed through for another shot at goal.

Sam had some family rivalry going with his sister Emily, the battle took place midfield and Sam came away with the ball for a drive downfield to his team mates.

Ryan defended well in front of their goal under a strong barrage of girls who were focused on scoring.  He finally won the battle and gave it a good kick through the line to take the pressure off Jonathan in goal.  Matt then put in a big kick up field which went wide and out of field, giving the team a chance to regroup.

Those Diamonds were a force to be reckoned with in front of their goal, giving Jonathan a chance to show his consistent awesome skills, he wasn’t letting anything past him.

Alex was playing a thinking game, taking a defensive position - watching and ready from back field to intercept the loose ball which he did beautifully.  He then drove forward with energy and speed, way too zippy for the opposition.

Now it was Fletcher’s turn to show his brilliance.  He gave a good strike forward and drove the ball into the goal, yep there was Amy waiting again to foil our attempts at scoring.   Fletcher followed up with a good drive from centre field, keeping the ball under control to put in another attack right in front of goal, but still not making it past the posts.

Ryan stepped in, with smart ball control brought the ball in front of the goal, lined up, and fired off a clean strong kick – but nothing was getting past Amy now.

Jamieson took Kalanie on, he maneuvered through her tackle, and nailed a big kick to the goal, but there was Amy yet again!

Half time 1 -0.

The girls came out firing in the second half, taking our boys a bit by surprise.  Fletcher got tackled to the ground, was this rugby? The girls ran hard and seemed to stun our boys for a stint.

Jonathan again found himself as the sole defender in goal and was under pressure from the Diamonds but he kept his cool and his eye on the ball, showed commitment and put his body on the line.  They weren’t scoring past him.

Fletcher found his feet again and attacked the ball, drove the full length of the field until he was challenged. This set up another family battle between Sam and Emily, way to go Sam, the team came before family today!

Once again Alex was onto the loose ball, sped off down field with great control, and put it in towards the goal.  Arrghh, it was stopped, no wait a sec, Yes its in!  Awesome maneuvers Alex!  Score 2 – 0.

Ryan came at the girls, showing a secret tactic, he somehow collided, turned it into a back flip - during this the opposition lost a boot which she stopped to put back on – way to take them out of the play Ryan!

Jonathan gave a big kick out of the goal, and the team combined well to bring the ball up to our goal.  Matt used his strong boot to drive upfield where Ryan controlled it and had a try at putting his name to some points.  Not this time though.

In Jamieson’s desire to control the ball, his hands got into the action giving the girls a free kick.  This riled Jamieson into repair mode, he successfully defended the ball, and drove strongly forward to our goal, lined it up and Yes through it went!  Yeehaa!!  3 -0 to the Jets.

The boys were keen for more points, there was a team attack in front of our goal, they absolutely peppered their goalie, but nothing went past.

Matt was focusing on some fancy footwork which confused the opposition and nearly tied his feet in knots.

Alex, Ryan and Fletcher teamed up for a fast and furious drive and took their goalie on.  She teased them a bit before deciding to claim the ball.

Jonathan was put under surprised pressure when our team brought the ball across in front of the goal to take it down field giving the Diamonds another attacking opportunity.  Luckily Jonathan was ready and saved yet another attempt.

Alex ran onto a big drive downfield, showed control, won a challenging tackle and kept going for a kick at goal.  Jamieson was alert and positioned himself well to win a thrown in from the Diamonds right near the supporters sideline, and kicked it for touch.  Game over, awesome team effort - Go Ohope Jets!

Ohope Jets  v Te Teko Tuna - 21 May 2011

Our team kicked off with a great team effort.  Sam showed commitment to the ball and took some hard hits, and lined up for a good try at goal.

Tamati was on fire in the first half, showing good strong kicking and following it through. He had a scoring opportunity in front of the goal, making a sustained effort.

Bryon got into some attacking action centre field, and moved the ball towards our goal.  He combined well with others directly in front of the goal, putting repeated pressure on the opposition, but unfortunately again we did not get the ball through the posts!  You had their goalie worried though.

Te Teko’s 2 fit firecrackers ran hard, kicked hard and made our team play hard.  But Jonathan had good positioning in goal, and showed no fear when claiming the ball to stop them from scoring.

With this being Jamison’s first game of the season he showed his enthusiasm and was never far from the action, tackling well, driving forward, moving back for defense, and putting in a great attempt at goal which just missed in the corner.

Ryan positioned himself well in the centre goal zone for Jamieson to put a pass over to him for a shot at goal.  Both showing awesome teamwork skills, but still those points were eluding us.

Ryan was in great form throughout the game, running well on defense, and repeatedly attacking the ball, his keenness and focus was consistent.

There was an impressive team attack near half time, and persistence paid off with Tamati sending the ball through the posts for our first points.  YAHOO!!!  One- all at half time.

Bryon likes that centre field spot and was not shy to move onto the opponents for some attacking action.  He combined with Sam to pressure the ball and slow those Te Teko firecrackers down.

Jamieson made an impressive attack mid field, won the ball, and drove towards our goal, fired one off, and was oh so close to scoring.

Sam showed great support skills, with good thinking he passed into the centre field, to clear the ball for his mates.

Fletcher and Ryan showed that they were a force to be reckoned with, in a dual effort they brought the ball towards the goal, and continued the attacked in front of the posts, with Fletcher’s foot making the final touch on the ball – another goal for us!

This proved the turning point in Fletcher’s career, he was now unstoppable, he sought the ball, turned and drove towards the goal, any previous uncertainty vanished, he was now on a mission!

Amongst all the excitement, our team seemed to vanish on defense and Jonathan had to face the wrath of the Te Teko firecrackers single handedly.  He defended our goal under a frenzy attack, stood his ground and saved numerous attempts at goal for us. Way to go Jonathan!

Sam came alive and drove the ball well to our goal, until he was defended and stopped midfield.  Not to worry along came Fletcher, he got control of the ball, and fired off a shot at goal, yes another goal for Fletcher!  The crowd went wild!!  Score 3-1

It was great to see Alex on the sideline in support of the team, even though he was not feeling his usual zippy self. Hope you get better real quick!

PLAYER OF THE DAY

Fletcher

Well done Fletcher, you stepped up and came out of yourself!

Ohope Jets v Kawerau Red Dragons - 14.05.11

Well our first game is under our boots!  With a result of  2-1, and they were very lucky; it could easily have been a draw!

PLAYER OF THE DAY

Jonathan

Well done Jonathan, you did a great job in the goal.

It was a good start to our season, with everyone really enjoying the game and having fun.  We kept the ball in our half for a lot of the game, and gave their goalie a good work-out.  We had lots of chances at scoring, with some good shots for goal being taken.  Tamati had an awesome 2nd half, showing that he is able to transfer his league skills across to the soccer field without any worry.  Good effort!  And Sam gave it his all, putting in a great effort.

Our team showed they were keen and enthusiastic, and worked well together while rotating the players onto the field so everyone got a good run.    With a bit more training and improved skills, we will be turning lots of those shots at goal into scoring action!
