Ohope Thistle 9 - 0 Awakeri Dragons
A beautiful morning at
Bluett park saw Thistle, minus Campbell (who was sick), take on the
Dragons of Awakeri.
The team had been told to stay
focussed from the start and it was a much better effort all
round. There were one or two passes played in this game that were
absolutely top class and one or two moments when the ball should have
been passed but was taken on. Overall though it was a better team
performance and the full backs Connor and Tom played well all game,
getting forward in attack and keeping Awakeri on the back foot. This
attacking policy almost came unstuck however, when Awakeri burst
through the middle and only a superb save from Fergus denied Awakeri a
goal. From a coaching point of view, it was great to see Fergus
come off his line and make the save and this should give him confidence
for the Rep games.
Vinnie the sweeper kept his
position well all game, urging his full backs forward and did all that
was asked of him. A tidy effort.
At half time Thistle were four
goals to the good and Calum who was missing with tonsillitis last week,
was finding his rhythm with two goals to his credit. Ethan and Dylan
too were driving the play forward and only some solid defending from
Awakeri kept the score at four. Ethan and Ryan having got one goal
each. Ryan has clearly been thinking about his game and stepped up his
performance with two goals in total and a good effort in attack.
At half time it was a relief not
to have to growl the team for lack of commitment and in the second
half, the level of performance was sustained with Awakeri conceding an
early own goal, before Calum completed his hat trick and Fergus chipped
in with one of his own. Vinnie had asked at half time if he could take
the goalie gloves and Fergus was grateful to get a run at centre
forward. Vinnie had played well at sweeper and it was a quiet ten
minutes for him in goal. With the score at 8 -0 and time nearly up,
Dylan seized the moment and with some lovely dribbling ran through the
heart of the Awakeri defence before rifling a shot low into the goal. A
great finish !
Two games to go and all to play for. "C'mon Thistle ! "

Thistle 7 - 0 Otakiri Raiders
Thistle
dominated the first half with the Lion's share of possession, but
lacked a
clinical edge around the penalty box and despite some strong running
from Dylan
down the right and hard work from Ethan through the middle, they got to
half
time only two nil ahead, thanks to goals from Ethan and Campbell.
This was a
double point game to make up for the game missed during the first
serious bout
of winter rain, so there was much to play for and the players were
subjected to
some well chosen words at half time !
The second half
was much better and Ryan turned in his best performance for some time,
with
great running from midfield and was unlucky to have a goal disallowed.
The
defence guided by 'Vinnie the Sweeper' pushed forward with Tom linking
well
down the right and Connor turning in yet another solid game on the
left. Campbell showed too that he is
playing with his
head and played through some great passes to Fergus and Ethan. Fergus
was
deserving of a break from goal and was unlucky not to get on the
scoresheet
when he hit the post. The half however, belonged to Ethan, who stepped
up and
chipped in with four more goals. The move from sweeper to a midfield
role
really suits Ethan and in the absence of Calum it was good to see the
goals
still flowing.
It's always
good to see the skills acquired at practice put into good use and
special
mentions go to Tom and Dylan for their efforts.
Thanks to the
parents for their support and to Ash for once again helping out with
the
refereeing.

Thistle 1 - 2 Saints K9's
In
a game full of skill and drama, Saints K9's showed the necessary hunger
and
commitment to gain a 2 -1 victory over Thistle. For the spectators it
was a game
full of entertainment and passion and both sets of players can take
huge credit
for a game played in great spirit. There were chances at both ends
throughout
the game, but a great goal from Alex in the first half was just reward
for an
energetic display on The K9's left wing. Gregan scored their second
with a well
hit shot from the edge of the penalty area after Thistle failed to deal
with a
corner and in reply Campbell slotted
home an equaliser after Calum had hit the post following some fine
attacking
play.
The
K9's really tested the Thistle defence and there were standout
performances
from Ethan and Connor and superb efforts from Vinnie and Tom. Hold your
heads
high. Fergus has had few opportunities to show his skills in goal this
season,
but he pulled off a couple of great saves and his distribution was
first class,
which eased the pressure on his defence.
In
attack, Calum starting at centre forward, used his energy and dribbling
skills
to pressure the K9s defence throughout the game and when switched to
the left
wing created a number of chances. Dylan, alternating between the wings,
ran
hard at the K9's and worked his socks off to get back and cover. He was
unlucky
with a couple of goal chances and on another day might have scored a
hat trick. Campbell like
Dylan was switched between wings and his energy and commitment were
needed in
this game. He took his goal well and like Dylan, worked hard to cover
back in
defence. Ryan, starting the game on the left wing was busy throughout
the match
and linked play well whether playing in the middle or on the wing.
It
was mail biting stuff alright and as Ash Gordon said , with the score
at 1-
1..... the game could go either way. Sadly it wasn't our way. We had
our
chances in front of goal and Vinnie and Ethan combined wonderfully to
contain
alex in the second half. However, the Saints players just wanted
to win
that little bit more and the pride and passion they felt showed at the
end.
Next
weekend many of these players will be team mates at Reps and the
challenges
will be massive. Exciting times !
Ohope Thistle 8 - 1 Te Teko Mako
A lovely Saturday morning at
Bluett saw a full strength Thistle take on the Te Teko team who had out
muscled them last time they met. With Fergus promised some time at
centre forward, the team started with Calum in goal, Vinnie at right
back, Connor at left back and Ethan as sweeper. Up front Campbell took
on the left wing duties, Fergie was as described, while Ryan played on
the right wing. Tom and Dylan were the subs.
Whether its the early starts or a lack of focus, Thistle played
leadenly at times and really should have done much better with the
amount of possession they had. Thankfully, Campbell has really come
into his own these last few weeks and having shrugged off a foot
injury, took the chance to fire Thistle ahead with a lovely strike from
outside the penalty area following some good lead up work down the
right wing (from Dylan or Ryan?). One nil up settled the team and the
defence showed its worth standing solid against the Texans. It was
crowded in the middle and Fergus was finding it difficult to move the
ball around, but there was plenty of good running on the wing from
Dylan, who is back on form, Ryan who is learning his new role and
Campbell who always gives his best. With half time approaching, a
Thistle attack was thwarted by a hand ball in the penalty box and the
referee pointed to the spot. Ethan who has been handed the role of
penalty taker, stepped up and fired hard and low to the 'keepers right
making it two nil to Thistle.
At half time the team were shuffled around with Fergus returning to
goal and Calum leading the line. After a few words from the coach
regarding the quality of passing and level of communication the team
stepped up a couple of gears. Tom and Connor played outstandingly well
in the second half in defence and Vinnie showed his consistency on the
right with a performance of grit and determination. The safety first
attitude at the back gave the Texans few chance but they did mange to
pull one back to make it 2 - 1 before Thistle tore them to pieces
with relentless pressure down the flanks and through the middle.
Campbell, Ryan, Calum and Dylan all ran hard and Calum showed that he
is learning the art of centre forward play with six goals in a display
of quality finishing. A fine team effort in the second half and a good
result before the visit of the K9's next Saturday.
An extra mention for Connor. This is his third season with me and its
great to see him realise the potential that we all thought he had. He
kept his position all game, tackled bravely, played safe when he needed
to, linked well down the left side and forms a great defensive team
with Vinnie, Tom and Ethan. I know he's put in a lot of practice at
home and its beginning to show !

Awakeri Dragons 1 - 7
Ohope Thistle
Thistle came to slay the Dragons,
but were slow out of the blocks and somewhat reluctant in the tackle
and were one goal down before two minutes had gone. Too late to bed
seems to be the source of the lethargy for many of the team and it took
a while before they hit their stride. Fergie didn't see a lot of the
ball in goal and in fact his only action of the first half was the
early shot that beat him with its accuracy. The introduction of
Ethan at the back and Calum up front lifted the energy and after ten
minutes Thistle had come back to one all. From there Thistle began to
put together some passes and Ryan linked play well through the middle
and from a corner Campbell came close with a stunning header that went
narrowly wide. Connor, Tom, Vinnie and Ethan mopped up everything at
the back and by half time with Thistle leading four one and the Dragons
fire had gone. Tom took the goalie gloves for the second half and
Fergie moved to the wing and Connor stepped up with an excellent second
half performance on the left that spoke volumes about his progress this
season. Dylan, Ryan and Calum were linking well and three more goals
followed. Towards the end, with only one defender on the pitch, Thistle
piled on the pressure and finished on a high. Despite an average
performance from Thistle, it was enough to take this game. Five goals
from Calum and one each from Ryan and Campbell were two more than they
scored in the previous fixture against the Dragons and certainly the
team seem to have benefited from their recent outings against the 11th
G Tricky Chicks (3-2 loss) and the fun run against the 13th G Ohope
Stealth.
Bring on the K9's !
Player of the day - Calum
Ohope Thistle 9 - 0 Otakiri Raiders
This was a terribly ones sided
game and it is difficult to keep the team playing at a decent standard
when they are not being challenged. Fergus our goalkeeper is becoming
very disillusioned with his position as he has little to do and for
this game he started as striker, with Calum taking the goalie gloves.
Thistle reached half time with the score at 4 nil, thanks to goals from
Connor, Fergus, Ryan and Campbell. The defence (any three) of Vinnie,
Tom, Ethan and Connor was efficient and they continually pressed
forward to keep the pressure on the Raiders. Ryan and Dylan were
working well but the soggy ground wasn't helping their running game.
A further five goals in the second half saw Campbell secure his hat
trick and Calum get in on the action with three of his own. Campbell is
settling in well and his versatility and ball skills are a great asset.
A satisfactory result and a good effort on a damp winter's day.

Ohope Thistle 12 - 0 Saints Go Girls
Winning twelve nil doesn't help
either team and Thistle were rarely challenged in this game, despite
playing on the Saints 8th Grade pitch, due to Bluett Park being out of
action. A first half hat trick from Fergus helped seal the deal, allied
to a hat trick from Calum, a brace from Ryan and Dylan, one from Vinnie
and a penalty from Ethan. Thistle's performance was patchy and the
players need to pass the ball much earlier rather than waiting until
they get into trouble before releasing it. With six of the team having
made the Rep Squad and three chosen for the Development squad, they
will have to lift their game if they are to make any impact at Rep
level. Still a win is a win, and three more points secured. Positives
for the team were the improved corner taking, the desire always to
score more and a fine penalty shot from Ethan.

Ohope Thistle 3 - 2 Saints K9s
With Bluett Park recovering after
the floods, the game was switched to Saints ground and from what I hear
Thistle, playing without subs turned in a useful performance, though
they required a bit of a tune up from Ash, standing in as coach for the
day. Goals from Ryan (2) and Campbell secured the win and Thistle
players and parents can feel happy that Michael White, the K9s coach
went home an unhappy man.
Vinnie seemed very proud of the win when I came across him today and
the whole team can feel happy that we have beaten our main rivals twice
this season. I still believe there is much room for improvement however
and that the team are not yet playing to their potential. Calum and Tom
should return this weekend for the game against the Go Girls and of
course the whole team will be attending the 9th Grade Rep Trials on 16
June. Hope the World Cup inspires the team.
I look forward to reviewing this game which was recorded on camera by
Rachel's oldest boy.

Te Teko 2 - 3 Ohope Thistle
Sporting contests are not always
about skill and flair. Sometimes its about aggression, heart and
physical presence. Thus it transpired that Thistle v Te Teko was a game
of skill v muscle and although Thistle pulled through in the end, it
was a hard fought victory with goals from Calum, Ryan and Fergus
securing the victory.
Thistle started off with a roar, with Te Teko struggling to get out of
their own half and Calum firing in a succession of shots, Dylan working
hard down the right and Ryan and Campbell providing solidity in the
middle. The defence was organised and Vinnie showed that he is
developing into a fine attacking fullback. On the opposite side of
defence Connor is also showing strongly and his ball control, passing
and positioning are proving useful assets. Time and again he won the
ball and linked the play beautifully. Its great to see him progressing.
Ethan and Tom also played very well in defence and it was good to see
Tom run strongly with the ball and Ethan show that he is thinking not
only about his own work, but also the overall organisation of the
defence, which is one of his responsibilities as sweeper.
Most of the game flowed Thistle's way until shortly before half-time
when a series of half hearted tackles resulted in a goal to Te Teko.
At half time the coach was still optimistic, as Thistle had come close
on several occasions and on a different day might have had five.
However when the second half began, it was a different story. The Te
Teko kids, who had already shown a physical presence on the pitch, got
stuck into Thistle and five minutes into the second half, Calum was
carried off after taking a big knock in the penalty area. Vinnie, who
had already taken a first half knock and was playing goalkeeper in the
second half, eventually came off altogether after some resolute
goalkeeping and Ryan ended up finishing the game as goalie. It was
tough going for Thistle and as Stuart McNabb said, "Te Teko have their
tales up". They surely did and despite great moments from Thistle, the
Texans were winning the 50/50 balls and applying the pressure. Respite
came in the form of an excellent free kick from Fergus from the edge of
the box and he made no mistake in hammering the ball past the Texan
defenders - when Fergie plays up front you are always guaranteed at
least one goal and he didn't disappoint.
Te Teko didn't let up however and it was only a matter of time before a
goal came and with the score at 3-2, the last quarter of the game was
full of tension and thrills. Campbell and Dylan both put in good runs
in attack, but to no avail and by now it was end to end stuff, with the
Texans winning corners and Thistle visibly wilting in the face of
strong tacking. In the end, Thistle held on for the win and made it
four wins from four. With a bye next weekend, there will be a chance to
recharge the batteries before the Saints K9's come to Bluett Park
looking to avenge their opening day defeat. Should be a great contest !

Ohope Thistle 8 - 0 Awakeri Dragons
Thistle turned in a very tidy
performance to secure a well deserved win. With Campbell back in the
team, but Ethan missing, there was a chance to experiment with Tom as
sweeper, Connor at left back and Campbell alternating between right
wing and centre forward.
Calum was fired up and ran strongly all game, securing a hat trick
within 12 minutes. With Ryan playing his usual tidy game and Dylan and
Campbell driving play forward, most of the first half was played in
front of Awakeri's goal. The defence of Vinnie, Tom and Connor repelled
all attacks and Fergus in goal was left to observe it all. Campbell
worked hard all game and secured a well deserved goal, while Ryan
scored one and Fergus got a brace playing as centre forward in the
second half. One goal in particular was a real delight as Ryan moved
the ball out to Calum, who flicked it back for Fergie, who then
delicately chipped it over the 'keeper. Great stuff.
Tom took the goalie gloves in the second half and showed that he has
handy goalkeeping skills. Vinnie and Connor are developing into great
fullbacks and although they had limited opportunities on attack, they
showed good concentration and did the basics well. The second half was
a little scrappier, but Calum secured his fourth goal and was denied
several times by outstanding saves from Awakeri's fearless goalkeeper.
Dylan didn't get on the scoresheet today, but he is an integral part of
the team and worked hard all game on the right wing and he and Campbell
are always a handful when running with the ball. A very good effort
from the boys and great support too.

Saints Go Girls
9am
- Perfect conditions,
give or take a few degrees, saw Thistle back at the home of the Saints
for the
second week running. With Dylan away and Campbell still sidelined with
injury
there were no subs, so it was do or die for the Ohope seven. In a tough
opening, the Go Girls defence stood firm against the Thistle attack of
Calum,
Ryan and Vinnie, but with almost 15 minutes gone Vinnie ran strongly
down the right,
held off the defender and finished with a low shot from a tricky angle.
One nil
to Thistle. Just before half time a corner from Tom saw Calum put the
ball in
the net and two nil was a satisfactory way to go in at half time.
The second
half saw Vinnie
move to goal to protect his injured ankle and Fergie move to centre
forward
with Ryan on the right. From the moment the whistle blew Thistle
stepped up a
couple of gears and began to play their tidy passing game. Calum, also
with
ankle strapped up, ran hard at the Go Girls defence while Fergie and
Ryan
produced some beautiful passes and lovely touches to link play and
stretch the
defensive line. The second half was one way traffic with four further
goals
added. Calum's determination secured him a hat trick, in addition
to hitting the post and bar, while Ryan finished off a beautiful
cross
with a delightful sidefoot shot into the roof of the goal.
Fergie's
nimble footwork and
Ryan's neat passing was causing no end of problems for the defence,
while
Connor produced his best ever performance with fantastic running from
right
back and a beautiful goal to cap a wonderful performance. Tom and Ethan
produced rock solid performances at the back and Ethan showed that he
is
rapidly adapting to the role of sweeper with solid tackling and
thoughtful
distribution. Tom is developing well as an attacking full back, running
hard to
good effect and linking well with Calum in attack. It was great
football and a
fine result.
First home
game next week
and hopefully Campbell will return to the lineup.

Thistle
What a start to the season !
Saints K9's have become our great rivals and this was a hard fought
game, which ended in a 2 -1 victory to Thistle. Fergie playing his
first proper game in goal showed great potential and Ethan, a new
addition to the team contributed well in his role as sweeper. Having a
sweeper means that the fullbacks....a combo of Connor, Vinnie and Tom
are able to push forward on attack and Vinnie in particular turned in a
huge performance and was man of the match. His hard running down the
right wing created a host of opportunities and he showed that he has
the skills to be an asset in attack and defence. Tom and Connor were
kept busy throughout the game with an endless number of tackles, while
in attack Dylan worked hard down the right and contributed well in
midfield. Ryan claimed two well deserved goals in a tidy all round
performance, where his ball control and link play was enough to keep
Saints on the back foot. Calum had one of his quieter games after a
busy opening spell where he shot wide with only the goalie to beat and
shortly after managed to hit the post. Not his day. When Campbell
returns form injury there will be some fresh legs up front and some
excitement in store. Not Thistle's best performance, but a good start !
